Sanctuary West
Condition 10/23
This is by far the greatest landscaping challenge of the property. There is “the wall” - the west side of Bethlehem’s sanctuary - that is imposing in its mass. It lands just feet from the parking lot - an equally hard surface. Between the wall and the lot is a sidewalk that, because of the way Bethlehem’s campus has grown is the primary circulation route of the campus. It connects the church sanctuary, classrooms, and offices with the BCS lIbrary, BCS staff offices and the primary overflow parking lot. This sidewalk is only 2 people wide - barely wide enough for people to pass by each other. To do so, people must walk single file - not condusive to conversation. Prickly overgrown barberry shrubs claiming half the sidewalk forces people to walk the drive instead. The space left for landscaping is minimal. For the landscaping to allow people to use the full width of the sidewalk while having some degree of proportion to the wall, requires something that grows tall and narrow while having a “weight” that works with the weight of the wall. Delicate hostas and flimsy grass does not do it.
Proposed Projects Completed
Trim back barberry shrubs to allow people to use full width of sidewalk. The fate of the shrubs, longer term, will depend on how well the shrubs react to being cut back and what the design solution is for this area.
Weed and rake mulch.
